What is a private assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment identifies areas of strength and weakness in a student’s learning profile and provides a deeper understanding of their abilities. It provides insight into a child’s thinking and reasoning, emotional development, social skills, personality factors, and can identify the presence of conditions impacting their daily life. Each child is unique but results often include DSM-5 diagnoses, special education eligibility determination, cognitive profile (IQ related scores), as well as child-specific cognitive, behavioral, and/or socio-emotional interventions/treatment plans.

A private assessment is confidential but can be shared with school districts if parents elect to. School districts are required to include private assessment reports in the student’s special education file and to utilize the results as deemed appropriate.
